The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.
