Doris Included in Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement update

Returning manager the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's URC league matches this season and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a international appearance.

Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, while veteran Northern province lock Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
