The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

In this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
